Volcano activity of August 12, 2012 – Iliamna, Mount Rainier, Nevado del Ruiz, Gakeras, Popocatepetl, Fuego, Mt. Tongariro, White Island, Sheveluch, Turrialba and Rincon de la Vieja

Last update: August 12, 2012 at 11:50 pm by By Richard Wilson and Armand Vervaeck

[IMG]This (almost) daily post intends to follow up the activity changes of volcanoes all over the world.
This post is written by geologist Richard Wilson who specializes in Volcano seismicity and Armand Vervaeck. Please feel free to tell us about new or changed activity if we haven’t written about it. -
    August 12, 2012 volcano activity
Clusters of earthquakes occurred overnight at Iliamna (Alaska) and Mount Rainier (WA) volcanoes.
Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia) may be rousing from its recent sedate behaviour with some mild ash emission during the past 24 hours and bursts of volcano-tectonic earthquakes. (station OLLE)
Nearby Galeras volcano continues to experience explosions of gas and ash, but seismicity at the volcano is remarkably low. (station ANGV; the signal near the bottom of the record is volcanic tremor, the signal above in the record is a regional earthquake signal)
Tremor continues to be visible on seismograms at Popocatepetl volcano (Mexico), though eruptive activity at the volcano remains reduced. Seismic signals recorded today at Fuego volcano (Guatemala) imply eruptive activity continues there. (station FG3)
In New Zealand, seismicity is very low at newly active Tongariro volcano, while volcanic tremor continues at White Island volcano.
Satellite imagery shows enhanced SO2 output (w/ash?) from Popocatepetl (Mexico), Shiveluch (Kamchatka Peninsula), and Turrialba and perhaps Rincon De La Vieja (Coast Rica) volcanoes.

Volcanic activity world-wide 13 Aug 2012: new activity at Tofua (Tonga Islands), Popocatépetl, Fuego, Santiaguito, Costa Rica, Nevado del Ruiz, Reventador, Tungurahua, Sakurajima, Tongariro, White Island

    Monday Aug 13, 2012 17:58 PM | Age: 26 min
    BY: T

[IMG] Possibly volcanic SO2 plumes over Costa Rica on 11 Aug (NOAA)

Activity has decreased at White Island. Ash emissions have been lower than in the previous days. Gas measurements showed that all volcanic gases were at levels lower than the previous measurement on August 1.

Tongariro volcano has stayed calm with and GNS scientists think that the most likely scenario is that the 6 Aug eruption was a single event and will not be followed by new eruptions in the near to medium future.

A "new" volcano just entered the watch list:
Out in the Pacific, a pilot observed an ash cloud rising from Tofua volcano to 3,000 ft (ca. 1 km) in the Tonga Islands at 04:42 GMT, VAAC Wellington reports.

El Hierro volcano: A total of 5 earthquakes (between M1.3-2.4) at 10-19 km depth has occurred today so far. This is the highest number in many days.

Activity remains weak at Popocatépetl in Mexico. About 1 weak eruption per hour has been observed during the past day by CENAPRED. SO2 emissions remain high (which is typical for Popo during phases of activity).

An elevated SO2 plume was visible above Costa Rica's Central valley on NOAA's SO2 monitoring images. It could have been caused by stronger degassing activity of the volcanoes Poas or Turrialba, both of which have been showing increased activity in 2011-12, but seem to have calmed down in the past months. Another SO2 signal is visible about 100 km east of Rincon de la Vieja and could have originated there. The Costa Rican volcano observatory doesn't mention any unusual activity.

Santiaguito / Santa Maria (Guatemala): An explosion at 05:49 local tie ejected an 800 m high ash plume and caused ash fall at Finca la Florida and around San Marcos Palajunoj. Only few and weak rock avalanches were reported since yesterday.

For Fuego volcano, INSIVUMEH reports 8 weak explosions during the past day, generating ash columns of 200-500 m height.
The lava flow in direction of Taniluya canyon has further advances and is now 300 m long and generates constant rock avalanches. Avalanches, too, have been observed towards the "Ash" (Ceniza) canyon.

In Colombia, sporadic gas and ash emissions continue to occur at Galeras and tremor signals are sometimes visible on the seismograms.
Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): Steam and ash emissions continue at Nevado del Ruiz at fluctuating intensity. This morning a fresh ash deposit was found at the volcano observatory.
The seimic recordings show tremor and a seismic swarm with 30 quakes since 22:27 local time last night, located NE of the Arenas crater between 3-5 km, in the same area as the previous swarm on 12 August.

Reventador volcano in Ecuador ejects a 1.5 km high steam plume, but IG mentions no explosions or ash.
Tungurahua volcano continues to emit a steam plume with small amounts of ash, and has occasional small to moderate explosions accompanied by gunshot sounds heard around the volcano.

Jumping to the far north, there is little new activity to be reported from volcanoes in Kamchatka, the Kuriles, Aleutians and in Alaska. It is rather surprising that this normally very area has stayed quite calm over the past week.

Satellite observations show again plumes at 7,000 ft (2.1 km) originating from Batu Tara (Sunda Islands, Indonesia).

Sakurajima volcano has had 2 weak - moderate explosions during the past 30 hours

    August , 2012 volcano activity
Mount Tongariro volcano (New Zealand) showed some seismicity earlier today (see seismogram below). The activity can only be seen in Oturere and West Tongariro seismograms (close to the Te Maari craters). Below also one of the rara clear view images of Mt. Tongariro with a strongly steaming vent. N report from GNS science about the seismicity however. The Park service has announced that the trekking trails at Mount Tongariro would be reopened. A 3 km hazard and risk zone will remain in place for some time and might be further reduced once new information of the gas and ash composition is known.
According to INGEOMINAS, the Observatorio Vulcanológico and Sismológico de Popayán reported that during 8-14 August seismic activity at Sotará increased. The seismic network recorded 110 magnitude 0.2-1.6 events mainly located in an area 0.1-5 km NE of the peak, at depths of 2-6 km. Inflation was detected in the NE area, coincident with the zone of increased seismicity. Web-camera views showed no morphological changes. The Alert Level was raised to III (Yellow; “changes in the behavior of volcanic activity”), or the second lowest level. (Smithsonian Institute)
KVERT reported moderate seismic activity from Karymsky during 10-20 August. Satellite imagery showed a weak thermal anomaly on the volcano during 10-13, 15, and 18-20 August. The Aviation Color Code remained at Orange.
KVERT reported that during 10-18 August weak seismic activity was detected at Shiveluch. Observers noted gas-and-steam activity during 15-17 August; weather conditions prevented observations of the volcano on the other days. Satellite imagery showed a thermal anomaly on the lava dome during 10, 12-13, and 18-19 August. Seismic activity increased to moderate levels and hot avalanches were observed during 19-20 August. The Aviation Color Code remained at Orange.
Insivumeh reports 2 moderate explosions at Santiaguito (Santa Maria), Guatemala. The other Guatemala volcano, Fuego sends a white plume approx. 50 meter in the air and grumbles every 1 to 3 minutes. See also seismograms from both volcanoes.
    Activity observed by satellites
VAAC reports still the same volcanoes which can be dangerous for aviation ; Sakurajima, Batu Tara and a very active Tungurahua
SO2 satellite imagery shows SO2 clouds at the following volcanoes : Etna, Kilauea and Nevado del Ruiz. Clouds of a number of other volcanoes are not defined enough to be sure.

Situation:The volcanic discharge of Mount Anak Krakatau, which usually affects Cilegon in Banten and Kalianda in southern Lampung, has now reached the city center of Bandar Lampung, the capital of Lampung province, located around 75 kilometers from the mountain itself. Based on observations by The Jakarta Post, the whole area of Bandar Lampung was covered in volcanic ash. Despite a thin layer, the ash was evenly distributed across the city. The volcanic ash also reached parts of Pesawaran and Pringsewu regencies. The head of the Information and Observation division at Lampung Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), Nurhuda, said the volcanic ash was carried by winds from the southeast. “High wind velocity has likely carried the ash from the southeast to reach as far as Bandar Lampung. We urge residents in the area to wear masks when they go outdoors, especially when they are riding motorcycles,” said Nurhuda. However, as of midday on Monday, many residents in Bandar Lampung were not heeding the BMKG’s warning.

The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG) has yet to upgrade Mt. Anak Krakatau’s alert status to a higher level despite the increase in seismic and molten lava levels in the Sunda Strait, as of Sunday. Agency head Surono said that Mt. Anak Krakatau had been emitting molten lava and strombolian eruptions as of midday on Sunday. The lava spewed at a height of between 200 and 300 meters from its peak at midday on Monday. Head of the Anak Krakatau Observation Post in Rajabasa, South Lampung, Andi Suardi, said that Anak Krakatau’s magmatic activities were unpredictable. “However, its status has not been upgraded to that of alert. Despite that, we are still not allowing tourists and fishermen to approach the volcano within 2 kilometers of its radius,” he said. According to Andi, Mt. Anak Krakatau emits 10 toxic gases during its eruption process, such as carbon doixide, which is fatal for humans. “Anyone who inhales the gas may experience breathing difficulties and lose consciousness. It may even lead to death,” he said. In West Java, Mount Tangkuban Parahu nature tourism park was closed on Monday due to a rise in volcanic activity.

“We’re not allowing vendors and visitors to go up to the crater at present,” said West Java Disaster Mitigation Agency head Sigit Udjwalaprana in Bandung on Monday. Earlier, the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency raised the status of Mt. Tangkuban Parahu from normal-active, or level 1, to alert, or level 2, on Aug. 23. “The people should be aware of a 1.5-km radius from the crater,” said Surono. The 2,048-meter volcano was last closed in April, 2005, on the grounds of increasing volcanic activities.

Situation:The activities of volcanoes in western part of Indonesia territory are escalating, with one of them, Mt. Anak Krakatau, located in Sunda strait spewing volcanic ash affecting area of downtown Bandar Lampung, local media reported on Tuesday. Bandar Lampung, the capital of Lampung province, is 75 km away from the volcano, further than the one in previous times that affected Cilegon in West Java and Kalianda in Lampung province, according to the media report. The whole area of Bandar Lampung was covered in volcanic ash.

Besides the Anaka Krakatau volcano, an apparent volcanic activity also occurs in Tangkuban Parahu volcano located in West Java. It made the authority close down the Mount Tangkuban Parahu nature tourism park. "We're not allowing vendors and visitors to go up to the crater at present," said West Java Disaster Mitigation Agency head Sigit Udjwalaprana in Bandung on Monday. Earlier, the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency raised the status of Mt. Tangkuban Parahu from normal- active, or level 1, to alert, or level 2, on Aug. 23.

Pressure in Mount Fuji is now higher than last eruption, warn experts

The pressure in Mount Fuji's magma chamber is now higher than it was in 1707, the last time the nearly 4,000-metre-high Japanese volcano erupted, causing volcanologists to speculate that a disaster is imminent.
The new readings, taken by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention, reveal that the pressure is at 1.6 megapascals, nearly 16 times the 0.1 megapascals it takes to trigger an eruption.
This, lead volcanologist on the case Eisuke Fujita told Kyodo News, is "not a small figure".
Researchers have speculated for some time that the volcano, located on Honshu Island 100km southwest of Tokyo, is overdue an eruption. In 2000 and 2001 a series of low-frequency earthquakes were recorded beneath the volcano, leading to widespread predictions of an imminent blow. Since the March 2011 tsunami and the 6.4 magnitude earthquake that followed four days later, Japan has been on tenterhooks, and in May 2012 a professor from Ryukyu University warned that a massive eruption within three years would be likely because of several major factors: steam and gases are being emitted from the crater, water eruptions are occurring nearby, massive holes emitting hot natural gases are appearing in the vicinity and finally, the warning sign that pushed the professor to make the announcement, a 34km-long fault was found underneath the volcano. The fault, experts suggested, could indicate a total collapse of the mountainside if there is another significant shift, and it would probably cause a collapse in the event of an eruption, leading to huge mud and landslides.
The new readings prove that the localised tectonic shifts of 2011 have indeed put immense pressure on the magma chamber, but the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention has qualified its warning by noting that pressure is just one contributory factor to an eruption. The 1707 eruption, however, was itself caused by a recent earthquake that amped up the pressure in its magma chamber.
"It's possible for Mount Fuji to erupt even several years after the March 2011 earthquake, therefore we need to be careful about the development," a representative said.
A 2004 government report originally estimated that an eruption would cost the country £19.6 billion. However, new studies are underway by Honshu Island's Shizuoka prefectural government. The study is focussing on the potential damage that would be caused by a series of simultaneous earthquakes in the Tokai, Tonankai and Nankai regions located along the Nankai Trough, where it is feared another earthquake will soon take place. The most recent models have revealed that, in the worst-case scenario, 323,000 people would die and the tremors could trigger an eruption at Mount Fuji.
Regions that would be affected, including Kanagawa, Yamanashi and Shizuoka, plan to hold a test run of an evacuation by 2014, with a meeting of local governments covering progress of the plans and of shelter preparations slated for April 2013

    เช้านี้ภูเขาไฟ Fuego volcano กัวเตมาลา ระเบิดอย่างรุนแรง

    September 13, 2012 volcano activity
Fuego volcano, Guatemala makes 10,000 people to evacuate
The rising tremor we saw yesterday at Guatemalan volcanoes Fuego (station FG3) and Santa Maria (STG6) culminated in explosive outbursts at both overnight. Pulses of tremor, now interspersed with earthquakes affect nearby Pacaya volcano today.(station PCG)
Nearly 10,000 people living in communities near the volcano have been asked by the authorities to evacuate after that volcan Fuego increased his activity today. The evacuation was ordered by the authorities when a lava flow with a length of 600 meter traveled along the slopes.
The authorities have also asked the population to drive carefully as roads are covered with ash.
Picture below, the tremendous ash cloud from the erupting Fuego volcano, active since along time, but now with a major outburst! Volcanic ash rose 1500 meter above the crater. The volcano activity level increased further and continuous explosions could be heard. Fine ash has fallen in a couple of locations near the volcano.
Although the ash cloud can wel be seen going down the slopes of the volcano, insivumeh does not talk about a pyroclastic flow. More pictures of the volcano eruption.

    Guatemala City

A long-simmering volcano outside one of the Guatemala's most famous tourist attractions exploded into a series of powerful eruptions Thursday, hurling thick clouds of ash nearly two miles (three kilometers) high, spewing rivers of lava down its flanks and forcing the evacuation of more than 33,000 people from surrounding communities.Guatemala's head of emergency evacuations, Sergio Cabanas, said the evacuees were leaving some 17 villages around the Volcan del Fuego, which sits about six miles southwest (16 kilometers) from the colonial city of Antigua. The ash was blowing south and authorities said Antigua was not currently in danger, although they expected the eruption to last for at least 12 more hours.
The agency said the volcano spewed lava nearly 2,000 feet (600 meters) down slopes billowing with ash around Acatenango, a 12,346-foot-high (3,763-meter-high) volcano whose name translates as "Volcano of Fire."
RECOMMENDED: The world's most active volcanoes
"A paroxysm of an eruption is taking place, a great volcanic eruption, with strong explosions and columns of ash," said Gustavo Chicna, a volcanologist with the National Institute of Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology. He said the cinders spewing from the volcano were settling a half-inch thick in many places.
He said extremely hot gases were also rolling down the sides of the volcano, which was entirely wreathed in ash and smoke. The emergency agency warned that flights through the area could be affected.
There was a general orange alert, the second-highest level, but a red alert south and southeast of the mountain, where, Chicna said, "it's almost in total darkness."
Teresa Marroquin, disaster coordinator for the Guatemalan Red Cross, said the organization had set up 10 emergency shelters and was sending hygiene kits and water. "There are lots of respiratory problems and eye problems," she said.
RECOMMENDED: The world's most active volcanoes

Machin volcano (Colombia): magnitude 4.6 earthquake on 7 Oct triggers seismic swarm

    Tuesday Oct 09, 2012 11:07 AM | Age: 2 hrs
    BY: T

[IMG] Seismic signal this morning October 9 (CIMA station, INGEOMINAS)

[IMG] Seismic signal with the 2 mag 4.6 and 3.9 earthquakes on 7 Oct (CIMA station, INGEOMINAS)

On 7 October at 21:32 and 21:35 (local time) 2 volcano-tectonic quakes with local magnitude 4.6 and 3.9 occurred beneath Cerro Machin at 12 km depth to the southeast of the main dome.
These earthquakes were felt by residents near the volcano, in the municipalities of Cajamarca and Ibague (Tolima), and in some municipalities in the departments of Risaralda, Quindio and Caldas.
These two events triggered in an increase in seismic activity which continued for a day, but seems to have calmed down for now.

As earthquake-report mentioned, Machin has not had any historic eruptions, but there are records of large explosive events in the past. The volcano awakened from a long period of dormancy in the 1990s with numerous earthquake swarms similar to the current ones, but so far has not produced an eruption.
The past several years have been relatively quiet ones at the volcano, but in the past few months, seismicity has again increased. Most of this activity is in the same region 12-15 km below the volcano and could indicate magma intruding there. It will be interesting to follow this volcano's activity in the coming months or years.

    Kilauea Volcano ,Big Island Hawaii

    Kilauea Volcano

    Big Island, Hawaii

    19.425 N, 155.292 W,
    summit elevation 1222 m
    Shield volcano
Kilauea is one of the world's most active volcanoes. The volcano has been in constant eruption since 1983. A large collapse occurred at Kilauea volcano in November 2005. Lava flows destroyed three houses in Royal Gardens subdivision in February 2008.

    More volcano information..
    October 2012 Update
Two lava lake are present at Kilauea volcano, Hawaii. The east pit lava lake in Pu'u O'o crater occasionally flows across the floor of the south pit. The summit lava lake in Halemaumau crater occasionally overflows the inner ledge. The surface of the lava lake varies from 60m to 150 m deep inside the pit. On the east rift zone an active lava flow is located at the base of the pali in the abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision. The lava contines to advance towards the ocean. Sulphur dioxide emission was high at 1200 tonnes per day on 28th September 2012.

    2011 Fissure Eruption
A new fissure eruption has begun at Kilauea volcano in Hawaii on 5th March 2011. The floor of Pu'u O'o crater collapsed over a period of 10 minutes. The event was preceded by a rapid deflation of Pu'u O'o and increased tremor along Kilauea's middle east rift zone near Makaopuhi and Napau craters. There was also deflation at the summit. New fissure opened between Pu'u O'o and Napau crater. The fissure ejected lava spatter 20 m high.

    2009 Bench Collapse
A bench collapse occurred at Waikupanaha ocean entry, Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii, on the afternoon of 17th February 2009 (local time). Four explosions were recorded between 12:45 and 1:15 pm. The lava delta and nearby areas remain dangerous and should not be approached. Bench collapse can occur without warning, and result in explosions and ejection of hot lava, and local waves.
    2008 Summit Eruption
An explosive eruption occurred on 19th March 2008, at Halema`uma`u Crater at the summit of Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii. This was the first explosive eruption in the summit crater since 1924. The explosion occurred at the location of the new gas vent which formed the week before. The eruption was probably phreatic, and created a crater 30 m in diameter. Debris was thrown as far as Crater Rim Drive near Halema`uma`u parking area 350 m away. Crater Rim Drive has been closed recently due to high level of gas emission in the area. The explosion occurred 3 miles from the town of Volcano with a population of 2200.
    Kilauea Volcano Safety
Hiking at Kilauea volcano is a demanding activity, and is best pursued by those
who are physically fit, experienced in hiking, have suitable clothes, enough water, and be informed about the risks.
Deflation-inflation events at Kilauea volcano in Hawaii are caused by changes in a secondary magma chamber east of Halemaumau Crater at about 750 m below ground level. This secondary magma chamber produces episodic deformation events.

    Kilauea Volcano Eruptions

    1983-2012, 1982, 1980, 1979, 1977, 1975, 1969-74, 1967-68, 1965, 1963, 1962, 1961, 1960, 1959, 1954, 1952, 1934, 1931-1932, 1930, 1929, 1927, 1906-24, 1905-06, 1903-04, 1902-03, 1897, 1896, 1823-94, 1820, 1790, 1750.
Earlier eruptions are not accurately dated.

    October 9 , 2012 volcano activity

Wind around anlow pressure system has subsided enough to reveal that very small earthquakes continue at Little Sitkin volcano (station LSSA).

Small earthquakes also continue at or near Mammoth Mountain (CA) today (station MMS).

Emissions of gases (mixed with some ash) have dropped dramatically to an average of once per six hours at Popocatepetl volcano (Mexico)

Another outburst occurred yesterday afternoon (after the previous report was issued) at Fuego volcano (Guatemala) (station FG3). Tremor and small volcanic earthquakes continue at nearby Pacaya volcano (station PCG).

What appears to be strong tremor is likely telemetry interference on today’s seismogram from San Miguel volcano (El Salvador). The other disturbances on the record are in fact volcanic earthquakes and weak tremor (station VSM).

Earthquakes (aftershocks?) large and small continue within the southwest “nest” near Machin volcano (Colombia) today (station CIMA). Small earthquakes and tremor also affect Nevado Del Ruiz and Galeras volcanoes (stations OLLZ and ANGV respectively).

In New Zealand, small earthquakes are visible on the seismogram recorded at Tongariro volcano, while White Island volcano continues to tremble with volcanic tremor.

Recent satellite imagery shows relatively weak SO2 emission from Turrialba volcano (Costa Rica), Sakurajima (Japan), and stronger (co-eruptive?) SO2 emission from Bagana and Manam volcanoes (New Guinea) and at Popocatepetl volcano (Mexico).

A coast guard vessel spotted a white plume of smoke rising from the sea about three miles north-northeast of the island. It was the first time since July 2005 that volcanic smoke had been detected in the area, which is located about 745 miles south of central Tokyo. According to an announcement by the 3rd Regional Coast Guard Headquarters of the Japan Coast Guard, based in Yokohama, the volcano spewed ash and smoke about 100 meters into the air, and the surrounding sea area changed to a yellowish-green color while other parts became a cloudy gray. According to the Meteorological Agency, the volcano, known as Fukutokuokanoba, has erupted seven times since 1904, when its activities were first recorded. On three occasions, land masses were formed, but all later sank below the waterline. Tokyo Institute of Technology Prof. Kenji Nogami, an expert in geoscience, said: "In the 1986 eruption, a new island appeared after lava accumulated. The island was washed away by waves, but seabed upheaval reduced the water depth to 22 meters in 1999. It's possible that this (recent) volcanic activity could form a permanent island."

Kilauea Volcano lava lake reaches highest level ever

Kilauea Volcano lava lake reaches highest level ever

Posted on October 17, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol
<!-- .entry-meta -->[IMG]October 18, 2012HAWAIIKilauea Volcano has been putting on quite a show lately… as the lava lake within the Halemaumau Crater has reached its highest level since the summit eruption began in 2008. The lava lake at Kīlauea’s summit was only about 150 feet below the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu crater on Sunday — the highest it has reached, according to the scientists of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. For the past several months, lava within the summit vent has been slowly rising. As of October 5, 2012, lava reached a level that covered the previous high-lava “bathtub” ring within the vent. It was around this time that the bangs and booms of the volcano began to be heard as far away as the Jaggar Museum Overlook in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, thrilling crowds day and night. This video shows the heat from the high lava lake level in the overlook vent, causing the walls of the vent above the lava surface to expand and fracture. Scientists say this is the source of the cracking and booming noises emanating from the vent in recent days. Here, we see small fragments of rock exploding from the wall and scattering onto the lake surface. The HVO says the rise in lava level within the vent is associated with a modest uplift and expansion of Kilauea’s summit area. The root cause for this expansion isn’t clear. Scientists don’t believe there’s an increase in magma supply from below. They do believe there could be a connection in the volcanic plumbing system between the summit magma reservoir and the active Pu`u `O`o eruptive vent on Kilauea’s east rift zone. On at least three occasions between March and September 2011, the level of the lava lake within the summit vent was unusually elevated. This condition caused increased pressure within the east rift plumbing system, resulting in notable eruptive outbreaks: the short-lived Kamoamoa fissure eruption just uprift of Pu`u `O`o and two subsequent events in which Pu`u `O`o was split open along its flanks. This time, however, it appears that the associated high summit pressure has not significantly transmitted down the volcano’s east rift. The lava level within Pu`u `O`o crater, while elevated, is not extraordinarily so. And even though lava is flowing through a tube near the base of the Pu`u `O`o cone, flows haven’t reached the ocean in nearly a year. According to the HVO, a steady decrease in Kilauea’s east rift zone gas emissions since August 2012 also suggests a decrease in magma flow between the summit and east rift zone. Scientists say one possible outcome of continued summit expansion and lava level rise could be an eventual outpouring of lava on the floor of Halema`uma`u Crater. Alternatively, the increased pressure might overcome the apparent constriction, resulting in an outbreak somewhere between the summit and Pu`u `O`o, akin to the March 2011 Kamoamoa fissure eruption. –Big Island News
