    Sunspots are popping up all over the solar disk. Credit: SDO/HMI

    VERY SPOTTED SUN    : Solar activity is still relatively low, but the appearance of the sun suggests the quiet might not last. Over the weekend, a profusion of new sunspot groups peppered the solar disk with dark cores--each one a potential source of eruptions. NOAA forecasters estimate a 35% chance of M-class flares and a 5% chance of X-flares during the next 24 hours. Solar flare alerts: text, voice.

    There are so many spots on the sun, even a jumbo jet cannot hide them:

    Solar Update
    New Sunspot 1654 was numbered after rotating into view off the eastern limb this morning. Sunspot 1640 is now located on the western limb and out of direct Earth view. Sunspot cluster 1652 has been mostly stable, only managing a low level C-Class flare within the past 24 hours. There will remain a chance for an isolated M-Class flare. Stay tuned to SolarHam.com for the most up to date and reliable information.

    กราฟ SN ล่าสุดออกมาแล้ว จุดสุดท้ายของกราฟที่เว้นว่างไว้ท้ายปี 2012 ได้รับการเติมเต็ม
    จะเห็นว่าจำนวนจุดดับบนดวงอาทิตย์ปลายปี 2012 ลดต่ำลงอย่างไม่น่าเชื่อเหลือไม่ถึง 40 จุด
    ซึ่งขัดแย้งกับคำทำนายเรื่องวันสิ้นโลกเป็นอย่างมาก และต่ำกว่าการประเมิณของนาซาเองอีกด้วย
    (เส้นสีแดงคือการประเมินจำนวนจุดดับที่ควรเป็น )

    ซึ่งการลดต่ำมากๆของจุดดับไม่ใช่เรื่องดี เพราะหากมีผลไปจนลมสุริยะลดความเร็วลงต่ำเป็นเวลานาน
    อาจทำให้เกราะป้องกันระบบสุริยะหรือ heliosphere ลดกำลังลง
    เปิดโอกาสให้อนุภาคแปลกปลอมจากภายนอกระบบสุริยะ หลุดเข้ามาได้มากกว่าปกติ
    อนุภาคพวกนี้ คือสิ่งที่เรียกรวมๆกันว่า รังสีคอสมิค ซึ่งเป็นอันตรายต่อสิ่งมีชีวิต
    หากทะลุเกราะป้องกันด่านที่สองและสามคือสนามแม่เหล็กและชั้นบรรยากาศโลกลงมาได้

    ปล. เริ่มต้นปีแต่จุดดับกลับมีจำนวนเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็ว
    และ ณ ขณะนี้ จุดที่น่าจับตามองมากที่สุดนั่นคือ จุดดับหมายเลข 1654
    หวังว่าคงจะไม่มีการประทุใด ๆ ที่รุณแรงกว่าระดับ M Class นะครับ

    Updated image of the visible solar disk on Wednesday morning. Solar activity remains at low levels for now. The largest regions on the visible solar disk are Sunspots 1652 and 1654, and each are currently producing C-Class solar flares. There will remain a chance for an isolated M-Class solar flare.

    Big Sunspot 1654 continues to rotate more directly into Earth view on Wednesday. This large group consists of two main cores, in which the leader spot appears to be the most complex.     Here is an updated image of Sunspot 1654 this afternoon. A new line of sunspots looks to be forming within the center of the cluster. I will continue to monitor this region.

    Solar Update
    Below is an updated image of the visible solar disk on Thursday morning. Sunspot 1652 and 1654 remain the largest threat for moderate solar flares, but so far only C-Class flares have been detected. Region 1652 is classified as a Beta-Gamma-Delta magnetic group, while Region 1654 remains a large Beta group, that continues to develop in complexity.
